Hypnosis and the Right Brain Dominant ChildGale Glassner Twersky

You have heard how difficult it is to put a square peg into a round hole? That comparison can explain how a child who is “right brain dominant” feels living and being educated in a school environment that is most appropriate for “left brain dominant” or “brain balanced” children. Can you imagine how it feels when your brain just thinks differently from your peers and they, as well as your teachers, have difficulty understanding you and vice versa?
Typically the left brain dominant children are attracted to math, science, computer programming and other very concrete, logical studies while right brain dominant children are attracted to drawing, painting, music, photography, graphic design, inventing, writing and very creative, imaginative occupations.
Characteristically speaking, right brain dominant children have a highly developed sensitivity to nature and beauty. They may also be extremely sensitive souls whose feelings get injured very easily. They may, without a means for filtering, accept your words directly into their hearts and feel them deeply. These are the children who are most adversely affected by scary movies, violent TV shows, frightening amusement park rides and gruesome news reports of tragedies.
Perhaps you can recognize this type of child as the one who is often daydreaming, easily distracted and has difficulty concentrating for long periods of time. They may be teased for not fitting into the mold that is expected for students. Many of these children are categorized as ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) as well. What you may be surprised to know is these children can do extremely well when they use hypnosis to help them adjust to their world. How is that so?
Well, where do you think these children go when they seem to be in outer space? As a hypnotherapist with years of experience with such children, I would tell you that they are in the altered state of alpha or theta rather than in the beta state of consciousness. In fact, they feel much more comfortable being in alpha/theta rather than in our typical beta state of consciousness. It is more natural for them to be in these relaxed and mind expanding altered states because they are the domain of the right side of our brain. Alpha is one of the states we enter when we begin sleeping. Many of our greatest artists, inventors and political leaders receive their inspiration when in that “dream state’. We all use that alpha or theta state to problem solve what our conscious minds are unable to resolve. It is our most creative state. It is also how we access our intuition.
But allow me to return to how hypnosis can help the right brain dominant child adjust better to demands of our left brain dominant society. Hypnosis utilizes the child’s alpha and/or theta state to present hypnosis suggestions for changing attitudes, feelings and behaviors. These suggestions reach the child’s subconscious levels and reprogram just like when a computer accepts new programming. Children thus may program their subconscious as to when it is appropriate to stay anchored in the beta state focused on absorbing conventional instruction and when it is okay to soar into the adventurous and unlimited realms of alpha/theta. The ideal is to have a balanced brain, equally able to use left and right sides of one’s brain power in an integrated approach to living well. The exciting news is hypnosis helps children as well as adults do just that and without changing their personalities or diminishing any of their abilities. Using hypnosis in this fashion raises a child’s self-esteem and sense of self-empowerment. Now is the time we understood how to help all children reach their potential regardless of what side of their brain dominates their learning style. Now is the time to take advantage of all options available for improving how we educate our students including the positive use of hypnosis. Now is the time to make it possible for a square peg to comfortably adjust to a round hole without losing its positive sense of self.
